There is this 100 Yen Shop across the street from the hospital that I never got a chance to walk into.
The door in the front was blocked and the door on the side of the building always seemed to be locked. Maybe the store
was someone's idea of a hobby.
Even that piece of art reminds me of someone's discarded bones.
I stumbled over this crosswalk with my "I-V" rig many times on my way to FamilyMart or J-Shop to buy some
goodies to munch on in the privacy of my sick-bed.
It's good to be back.
7 th floor elevators.
This is the way in to the 7 th floor rooms. Here is where I used to hide the stuff I bought from various
places. The nurses and doctors would see me come in and ask where I had been, "Kaimono?" They knew I was sneaking
food into my room, because all they had to do was look into my trash can and see the various wrappers.
These maps with so many difficult kanji in them were almost useless to me.
After 9 pm, these drinks were the only things available to buy. I tried to get my motorscooter parked at
the hospital so I could go out sometimes in secret. But, I was unable to manage it.
This J-Shop was my favorite store. The older woman there was rather kind to me.
This "aroma therapy" and massage parlor was just across the street from the hospital.
Here was somthing nice to look at outside of the hospital.
Atagoyama looks much smaller from this side.
Hospital food was very similar to this plastic stuff.
Nurse Gotou showed me this "less-used" restroom. The other restroom had some odor issues.
All of the artwork that I saw in the hospital resembled something of some kind of operation. I would
hope that, in the future, they select something more uplifting.
I have to mention that the telephones in the hospital are for local calls only. It is currently impossible
to call to another country. Nurse Gotou spent a lot of time trying to show me how to call to another country.
I thank her for that. But, she was given incorrect information by someone at NTT, the current telephone company of Japan.
You can get a pre-paid card for a television in your room.
30 to 40% of the patients die where I was bed. All of the serious cases are bed on the 7 th floor.
Well, that's what a nurse told me. I saw them taking a patient out. The doctors and nurses pretended to be
taking one patient for some testing. My Japanese is good enough to understand what the doctors and nurses were
saying. I overheard them talking about such and such that had suddenly passed on. And, I could feel the emotions
in the room from the doctor and nurse.
I must have looked out of this window over 200 times. All I could think about was "Early January,
Early January". That was my expected "taiin" date, release from hospital care. As it turned out, I suddenly came
down with meningitis and had to stay another month. The doctor told my wife something kept from me, I was either going
to become crazy or I was going to die. So, everyone was genuinely surprised when I came out of it in good health.
From my experience, Japanese don't show much emotion. So, I thought they were just "apple polishing" me when they talked
to me about it.
Whenever I could get away, I would escape to this area. Doctor Kawagoe would get very angry.
He wanted me to stay away from other people. He was right, I couldn't afford to catch something from someone from the
"outside". As it turned out, that is the reason I got meningitis. I wasn't careful enough. But, a man can
go crazy if there isn't enough freedom to go around.
This is where we took a shower or sometimes, a bath. I could never get used to having a nurse in the
room with me. In the end, I just felt, "What's gotta be done, has gotta be done."
Most of the work was done in these rooms. I had to undergo a lot of tests. A fear ran through
my body like something fierce was going to happen every time they rolled me into one of these rooms.

is a Yougou Gakkou somewhere. Nishishina Junior High School is near the fields. Black Concierto while be shown
on April 26. Nishida Yuko is the star. Yatai are small shops at a festival, matsuri in Japan. Sudo
